Dalit leader Mayawati has been stitching together key alliances to mount a formidable challenge to Narendra Modi’s BJP in the upcoming general elections.

In a bid to consolidate the divided vote, Mayawati has forged ties with key regional players including her arch-foes Samajwadi Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal party.

Mayawati rose to prominence after her Bahujan Samaj Party, won an outright majority in 2007 elections in Uttar Pradesh.

Dubbed as Queen of Dalits, Mayawati has a strong support base among the most backward caste which accounts for about 16 percent of India’s 1.1 billion people.
