At least 20 Afghan soldiers have been killed in fierce fighting for control of a strategic district in northwest Badghis province. Afghan government forces, backed by US-led war planes, are fighting to prevent Taliban insurgents from seizing Bala Murghab district.
Taliban said that its fighters have seized five checkpoints and captured 16 Afghan soldiers. The Defence Ministry said that government forces staged a tactical retreat from the checkpoints to prevent civilian casualties.
Earlier, the Defence Ministry said that twenty-six Taliban fighters were killed in US-led air strikes in Bala Murghab and Jawand districts of Badghis.
