The United States has expressed support for the commander of Libya’s eastern forces, Khalifa Haftar.
This comes as the White House said that President Donald Trump spoke to Haftar by telephone earlier this week.
Amid escalating fighting in Libya, US President spoke to the controversial commander General Khalifa Haftar on Monday. The White House said that Trump and Haftar discussed counterterrorism operations in Libya.
Acting Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan said that the U.S. needs Haftar’s support. “What I do support is Field Marshal Haftar’s support in terms of his role in counterterrorism but where we need Field Marshall Haftar’s support is building democratic stability there in the region,” he said.
News of the conversation between Haftar and Trump angered people in Tripoli, the seat of the internationally recognized government.
Protesters described Trump’s call as a sign of support for the ongoing eastern forces’ assault on the capital.
