Mortals have been obsessed with the idea of wanting to stay young forever, since the Victorian ages. I started reading ‘A picture of Dorian gray’ by Oscar Wilde a few days ago and came across a character, Lord Henry Wotton, who believed the same. He said that, “Time is jealous of you, and wars against your lilies and your roses…Ah! Realize your youth while you have it!” and this declaration got me wondering as to how many other people, in today’s day and age, felt the same.

Even though I personally disagree with Lord Wotton, I still sympathize with the people who concur with him. Like a flower blooming to magnificence in the season, our bodies too are naturally ripened to perfection during our early 20s. That healthy glow, those red and rosy cheeks and that silk resembling smooth skin. Indeed, youth comes as a gift to us but maintaining it isn’t impossible either.

For the internal system, it’s quite simple: wake up, eat healthy, work-out, stay clean, stay aware and sleep. But for our skin, it’s more complicated. Sagging and wrinkling of the skin are the most apparent indicators of aging. I’m not going to give you false hope by saying that you can stop the process of aging; that matter, my friends, is beyond the bounds of possibility. But the phenomena can certainly be slowed down. Here are the best anti-aging tips I got from my research:

1. Shield your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays.

The Sun is NOT your friend, folks. It births UVA and UVB rays. “Ultraviolet rays that are the cause of sun damage and skin cancer are always present,” explains Dr. Shilesh Iyer M.D, a Board Certified dermatologist with the renowned New York Dermatology Group. UVA rays penetrate more deeply into the skin and play a greater role in premature skin aging, causing wrinkle formation (photoaging). Whereas UVB rays are known to cause skin cancer. So whether indoors or outdoors, wear water resistant, broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every day. It is your greatest weapon.
Some of my favorite sunscreens are: The Beet Shield by Krave Beauty, COSRX Aloe soothing sun cream (SPF 50, PA+++) and Clinique mineral sunscreen.

2. Repeat: I will NOT overdo the CLEANSING. I will ONLY practice gentle cleansing.
When we use cleansers that are harsh we can damage our skin’s barrier function by making it more vulnerable to permeation. When our barrier function is compromised, our skin becomes more vulnerable to outside influences. Using a gentle cleanser can leave your barrier function balanced. Moreover your skin will feel more hydrated and won’t be irritated.

Dr. Zeichner says, “Some of the best quality cleansers are actually among the least expensive products on the market—for example, the Dove Beauty Bar is a gold standard product using ultra gentle cleansing ingredients that actually helps hydrate the skin.”

I personally love and worship raw organic honey for its gentle cleansing properties and so much more. I could rave about those for years, all devoted entirely to Honey’s grandeur. But in terms of cleansing, it possesses antibacterial, antiseptic and probiotic properties. Need I say more? It even refines the skin texture for all skin types. And it has the powers to balance oily skin and moisturize dry skin, at the same time. So magical.
Foaming cleansers and soaps rid your natural barrier of useful oils and secretions but honey doesn’t. There are other alternatives to it as well but it’ll be difficult to discuss all products, so here’s a list of toxic chemicals to avoid in cleansers:
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) / Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)


I recognize that it’ll be hard to find any one product with none of the above mentioned chemicals but those that have just one or only a few may also be used. I recommend these cleansers: Matcha Hemp Hydrating Cleanser by Krave Beauty, Belif Pore Cleanser Moisturizer and Dove Beauty bar.

3. Go easy on the frowns, mate.

Human beings have been known for their ability to express and then over-express for greater impact. Bad news for dramatists: You develop fine lines because of the repeated folding of the skin from underlying muscles. “Young, healthy skin has a strong foundation that resists folding and bounces back to its original shape, but, with age, that skin foundation gets weaker” Explains Dr. Zeichner. Some creams and other products that promise reversal, only do so to a certain extent the most effective way to prevent greater fine lines and wrinkles is to rest your muscles. Adieus straws, cigarettes and ‘moues’!

4. This one was a revelation: Sleep on your back.
Believe it or not, sleeping on your side or on your stomach causes the reinforcement of fine lines and wrinkles, and causes the skin on your chest to be scrunched, thereby creating newer wrinkles too. If you prefer sleeping on your side and want to change this habit then buy a special wrinkle preventing pillow. It looks like this:-

But as an alternative, you can try upgrading from a cotton pillow cover to one in silk or satin. “With a silk pillowcase, your skin slides on the pillow,” says Dr. Jaliman, henceforth reducing the friction between your skin and the cotton layer.

5. You are what you eat, my friends.
The condition of your skin speaks a lot about what you put into your body. I believe in moderation when it comes to diet and some of you may disagree but this is an extensive argument which I can only do justice to in a separate blog post. So here’s a list of foods that you should not consume under any circumstance. ABORT MISSION. MAYDAY. MAYDAY. MAYDAY.

Anything with added sugar

Consuming a lot of fried, grilled or broiled food. (Including French fries)
Potato chips
Processed meat

I know, its overwhelming. But trust me, as the biggest junkie at 18, I’ve been at my best only after a few weeks of healthy living. There won’t be any instant gratification in this case, like the one you get after the first bite of a fresh, cheesy, mouth-watering pizza but the blood, sweat and tears are worth the outcomes when it comes to leafy greens. Instead of the intoxicants above, consume these super-foods: Olive oil, berries, leafy greens, Nuts, Whole grains, yogurt, legumes and tomatoes.

6. To squat or not to squat? That is the question.
If you start working out in your early twenties, your 40 year old self will be extremely thankful. Skincare and healthcare are golden tickets that if found early, result in infinite riches. Because when you’re 20, you won’t notice any changes in your metabolism but after 10 years, you’re going to keep getting rounder and rounder and your skin will expand. So pump it up! Shake that Boot-ay!

7. For those in their late 20s, hydrate with humectants!
These miracle working products make up for the loss in moisture that your skin experiences overtime. They are perfect for efficient maintenance. Also incorporate Vitamin C in your skincare regime. It will plump and hydrate your skin.

8. Exfoliate, exfoliate more, and exfoliate better.
This practice should also be focused on more during one’s mid-20s. But it is required earlier too. Exfoliation basically enables dead skin cells to be removed so that new ones can inherit the throne. AHA’s (Alpha hydroxyl acids) are perfect exfoliators. Try Krave Beauty’s Kale-lalu-yAHA.

9. Eat Omega-3 fatty acid supplements. BINGO.

Our skin is mostly fat. Every stage of life, has its own perks. In the end, it is important to recognize that growing old isn’t so terrible. This period isn’t just characterized by fine lines or ailments but it is a one full of joys and sorrows as others are. Infact, growing old is an inevitable consequence of life. It is proof that we were once young. We cannot rebel against it. Thus embrace acceptance because the human brain is naturally designed to envy what it once had but didn’t cherish enough. Similarly, What Lord Wotton didn’t quite understand was that our lilies and roses aren’t only grown on the outsides. We water our souls and trim our demons to make them beautiful too. Alas always remember, dear reader, happiness and contentment can be planted even in the grimmest of times. So live each day to the fullest, do what brings you joy and make peace with what doesn’t.
